Professional Hair Color, Toners, Color Gloss and Glaze Treatments, and Color Locks/Seals:
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know
So, there’s no arguing the psychological effects that come from changing your hair color. But did you know that there are physiological benefits from coloring your hair, too? Yes, you can improve the health and appearance of your hair with professional hair color.
What Is a Hair Toner?
A toner can be the most important part of your hair color service. It is a salon application that helps correct and/or personalize your hair color. It is used after a professional color treatment to add natural or more visible hues, enabling your hairstylist to make sure you get an even hair color result from root to tip. Toners are most commonly used for shades of blonde hair, but it can be beneficial for brunettes and redheads, too. In order for toner to work, hair has to be bleached or dyed first.
A hair toner is a demi-permanent hair color that can alter the state of the hair’s color and pH level. Toners can be applied in between color treatments, not only immediately right after one, so that your color lasts and looks fresh longer. (Click here to read about the difference between demi-permanent and semi-permanent hair color.)
If you want the impact of a dye job without the commitment, a hair gloss is a good option. A gloss is a type of toner and is a temporary treatment that can help with both the health of your hair and its shade. Glosses typically gives your hair shine and evens out its tones. A gloss provides translucent color and intense conditioning. Semi-permanent hair gloss is typically a professional product of pigment mixed with developer. Direct dyes have just pure pigment and basically stain the hair. You don't have to change your natural hair color to get the benefits of a gloss. There's such thing as a clear gloss, which is an ultra-conditioning treatment for your strands. It will lower the pH level of your hair while giving it conditioning and shine.
Glaze is basically a gloss with one major difference: It has no ammonia or peroxide and can help to tame flyaway and frizzy hair. It’s basically a deep conditioning treatment that also helps to slightly boost color. Glaze rests on top of the hair shaft and doesn’t bind as well as a gloss does. Therefore, it’s easier to wash out and you’ll only get about one week of added shine, as opposed to the 4-6 weeks a gloss gives you.
Color Lock & Smooth Keratin Treatment Spray is a professional salons treatment that is all the craze. This 2-in-1 formula is used after color or highlighting services to lock color in and prevent fading, while also serving as an express keratin treatment, providing frizz and curl control simply and quickly, and lasts 4-6 weeks. (Click HERE to read more about keratin treatments.) My salon recommends Keratherapy Color Lock & Smooth Keratin Treatment Spray, which replenishes natural keratin and collagen proteins that are lost over time; reduces frizz and blocks humidity; locks in color, extends vibrancy and protects from fading; adds shine and softness; and deeply penetrates the hair while smoothing and sealing the cuticle.
