How to Get Beachy Waves at Home

Effortless looking beachy waves is a hairstyle trend that isn’t going anywhere. Tousled, messy, deliberately disheveled hair has been insanely popular the past few years, and nothing embraces this look better than beachy waves (also called mermaid waves). The look is feminine, natural-looking/earthy, and sexy ... and what guy isn’t attracted to a mermaid, right? The look is fabulous for shoulder-length (even bobs and lobs) and long hair alike. Pair beachy waves with a balayage or regular highlights for a sun-kissed hairstyle everyone wants.

You don’t have to be at the ocean to enjoy “Beachy Waves”. Here’s how to get those gorgeous waves at home, too! (HAIR CARE TIP: do NOT use the popular trend of adding sea salt spray to your hair to achieve this affect, which can be very drying, especially if you get keratin treatments ... it will strip the keratin in your hair!). Unstructured beach waves are easily achieved with the right products.

Here are four ways to create beachy waves at home:

1.    Without Heat-Styling ImplementsYour hair does NOT have to be clean to get the beachy waves affect. But if you wash your hair first here are some tips:

If your hair is straight or wavy:  After showering, blot hair with a towel, then finger-comb. Bend over, allowing your hair to hang down and tousle (not scrunch!) your strands pre-product to keep its natural texture. Then proceed with steps below.

If your hair is curly: Leave some conditioner in your hair, lightly rinsing with cool water. Gently use a wide-tooth comb while it’s soaking wet, then squeeze—don’t rub—with a towel. Then work through the texturizing process below, using the products outlined. Once your hair is totally dry (not a moment before, or you’ll create frizz), finger-comb to separate curls.

Prep with mousse

Your hair needs to hold the undone wave, so start by building up just-washed hair with a firm, non-sticky mousse. To keep it from looking greasy, finger-comb it through your hair evenly, starting about ½ inch from the roots.

Add texture

Sparingly use a texture spray, thickening spray, or styling cream, applying it from root to ends. Gently tousle each section as you work through your mane. Dry your hair upside down, using the tips at the beginning of this tutorial based on your hair type (straight/wavy or curly). Finish with a flexible hold hairspray.

 

2.     Using a curling iron

Use a two-inch barrel wand, which will make loose waves, rather than tight curls. After spraying your hair with a heat protectant spray (very important!), take a 2- or 3-inch section of hair and wind it it around the wand. Be sure to twist the hair as you wrap it – this gives an undone look to your strands when you unravel them. You want this look to be naturally wavy and not too uniform, so don't twirl your hair in the same direction for each section – one row towards your face, the next row away from your face, alternating directions as you move around your head. Instead of curling all the way to the ends of your hair, leave the ends straight for the natural, carefree look. Hold the hair against the iron for no more than six seconds, then let it drop, pulling at the ends to loosen the curl into a wave.

Once all hair has been curled, soften the curls by tipping your head upside down and break up the waves and all the hair at the roots with your fingers. If your hair is still feeling soft,  use some dry shampoo spray then continue to add that undone look with your fingers.

3.     Using a flat iron

Twist strands of hair into a tight spiral and slide your flat iron (paddle iron works best) slowly down the spiral. When entire head is done, finger comb and tousle, flipping your head upside down to break up the waves and all the hair at the roots with your fingers. If your hair is still feeling soft,  use some dry shampoo spray then continue to add that undone look with your fingers.

4.     No-Heat, Overnight Waves

One of the easiest ways to get beachy waves is to twist your hair up into 2-4 buns before you go to bed. Apply curling cream to freshly washed, slightly damp hair. (Optional: Twist each section from root to ends, or create braids, then wrap at the roots into tight honeybuns.) Secure tightly wound buns using strips of an old t-shirt (or hair pins) to avoid kinks. Leave in overnight and in the morning simply unroll and you will have beautiful beachy waves with minimal effort. Use a texture spray or dry shampoo sparingly, applying it from root to ends, before finishing off with a flexible hold hairspray. Gently tousle each section as you work through your mane.

The Finishing Touches

No matter which at-home method you use, remember that you can’t have beachy waves without a little texture. Spray your roots and strands with texturizing or volumizing spray to finish the look, and then break up your curls with your fingers (not a brush!) to tousle your waves.

'80s beauty signatures are staging a serious comeback in 2017 – clothing fashion, hair, and makeup. From crimps at Marc Jacobs’ Resort show, to spiral perms at Topshop Unique, styles once labeled glaring mistakes suddenly feel fresh and modern.

The high, side ponytail made a return to the catwalk for 2017. Wrap a band of hair around the base to add some fancy. Beachy waves are still hot. Create the look with a dollop of mousse and lots of scrunching for sexy, wet-look waves.

Perms are in. If you want beachy waves but have straight hair, get a semi-permanent, texture-enhancing salon perm or body wave like Julianne Hough did to achieve volume and movement in your hair. Rather than going for the big, teased look from the '80s, get a modern perm that offers a soft wave pattern.

 

Create a dropped-out perm using a chopstick curling iron to create skinny spirals.

 

Half-straight, half-wavy hair took center stage on the runway. Roots should be kept sleek, with the ends given an “S” wave.

The iconic beehive is back! All up or half-up. Pass me a teasing comb and some hairspray for this retro style that screams Brigitte Bardot.

Long hair? Channel Pippi Longstocking with cute, loose and low pigtail plaits.

 Simple, twisted low knots look sleek and stylish. This easy style is great for disguising unwashed hair or bad hair days.

Sleek blowouts with sweeping, curled ends were hot on the runway. 

 Go bohemian with some micro plaits. Accent braids add a bit of chic to a simple down ‘do.

 The mushroom cut (a bowl-like bob) is cool again.

 Looks like the hun (half-up bun) is here to stay. 

Hair Color Trends & Professional Coloring Techniques:

Delicate blonde hues are big in 2017 and perfect for summer. Shades are soft, almost see-through and pastel.

Hair strobing – individualized highlighting specific to your hair color, face shape and skin tone -- is much more flattering than plain bleach foils. Ask your stylist to customize your highlight colors to your specific features if you want hair color that makes you glow.

Color melting is the new trend that allows colorists to use multiple tones of color to create seamless color from root to ends, whether you are a brunette or a blonde. This multidimensional color effect uses a number of different colors in the same spectrum and blends them together to look as if the highlights could be happening naturally in your hair. 

Eclipting is coloring the entire head with a dark base then strategically placing highlights in specific sections to accentuate the shape of the hair while contouring the face.

Snowlights – With these highlights, shimmering pieces of pale blonde scatter across the top of the head like snow. As you can see from Miranda Lambert's 'do below, it’s a sparkling lift for your summer hair color.

Flaunting your grown-out roots is increasingly trendy. Shadow roots are going to the extreme. Instead of an inch of growth, expect to see a solid five-inch chunk between the root and color. And those impatient for natural grow-out are actually paying to have those roots darkened to achieve this look.

 

2016’s hottest color trend – rose gold, the color that blew up Instagram – is still hot. Like rose gold precious metals, it’s a pink-tinted blonde that lights up your look.

 

Warm blondes are making a comeback. Buttery beige and sandy blondes are overtaking icy blondes, as seen below with Gwyneth Paltrow. 

 

Blorange is the color mix to watch in 2017. It’s a hue between blonde and ginger.

Blonde-Gray is often seen with a solid inch of nearly-black roots. Also gray-gray is still a hit. You can read more about this color in my blog post HERE. 

Bronde is here to stay, a color that sparkles blonde in the light, and goes chocolate in the shadows.

 Honey-colored highlights in dark hair for a super-subtle look is gorgeous.

 Amethyst roots with platinum blonde is hot for a fun look. 

Protecting Your Hair for the 2017 Hairstyles and Colors + against Summer Hair Damage

Please, don’t even think about coloring or perming your hair without protection. And, if you want to go this route, you need to commit to proper hair care maintenance.
