Winter Hair Trends 2022: Layering is HOT!

Winter is for layering … yes, layering your clothes to stay warm and help adjust the body’s temperature going while going in and out of the cold. BUT this year, Winter is for HAIR layers, too! It’s the latest style! And you KNOW how Pat Alessi loves layers, texture, and movement in hair! This season, she is definitely in her element.

“Haircut trends this season will involve flattering length and layer distribution, adding playful face frames and fringes,” says RUSK Hair Global Creative Director Matt Swinney, who is seeing a lot of ‘70s and ‘90s influence lately. Layered hair is pleasantly low-maintenance, with lots of movement and can work with a range of hair textures.

Long Layers

Celebrity hairstylists and other experts are telling us that the latest and greatest styles are modern shags, long layered looks, cropped cuts, layered curls, and choppy layers.

Other layered looks that are trending are wolf cuts (a mullet with a voluminous twist)[1], and the modern mullet, AKA the “soft-serve mullet”[2]. (Yes, it's a "thing".)

More Retro Layering Styles That are HOT Right Now!

‘70s layers aka “feathering” (think Farrah Fawcett), as well as face-framing layers are BIG, with a huge trend being a modern twist to the 90s “The Rachel” cut (from the TV series “Friends”).

 Edgy + Soft = Bixie

Another hot look of the season is the BIXIE. The newly coined hair trend, "bixie" is exactly what it sounds like — a cross between a pixie and a bob. The bixie combines the edginess of a pixie with the softness of a bob, and it's suitable for all hair textures. The bixie cut can be tailored to any style depending on whether a client wants a more textured or a more polished look.[3]

Don’t care for layers?  Or at least not ready to take the plunge? That’s OK, because styles you love are here to stay, and some can even incorporate layering … like The Bobcat (a blunt bob). Celebrity hairstylist Sunny Brook recommends going an inch or two shorter for a bolder look. "The beauty of this cut is that it can be customized to any hair texture,” said Brooks. For fine hair, she recommends getting very blunt edges to add bulk. For medium or dense hair, you can add ghost layers to remove weight and add a bit of movement. And for thick wavy or curly hair, the stylist suggests going a bit longer with "added layers to remove weight and give your hair movement and openness around your face."[4]  The "Sliced Bob" is going to be everywhere this winter. This ultra-blunt cut is often seen on thin hair and super-sleek, but is also perfect for thick hair because it takes extra weight out and adds movement. Like so many iterations of the bob, the sliced bob looks amazing worn straight or wavy.

Bangs are big this winter, from soft sexy fringe to grown-out, cheekbone length curtain bangs[6] or feathery 1970s-inspired fringe (like the one Billie Eilish sports).

Cuts aside, a big style trend right now (and again, retro, this time the ‘90s) is “high, half-up/half-down hair”. And THE “in” color is Icy Blonde.[8]

This Guy Got a Keratin Treatment. Follow His Journey and Look at His Curls Now!

Intro:

Brett is a 24-year-old young man who is pleased to share his Keratin Treatment Journey with you! If you have been on the fence about getting a keratin treatment – especially if you are a man – his experience is insightful and helpful.

Q:    Brett, why were you interested in getting a keratin treatment?

A:    I've always had extremely curly and frizzy hair that I never knew how to manage. It was so difficult to handle, I started buzzing it off myself to negate the hassle. During (the Coronavirus) quarantine, I decided I would try to grow my hair out one more time since I was working from home, and my hair became extremely unruly to say the least. That's when I stumbled across something called "Keratin Treatments" that help tame and relax curls and eliminate frizz, which led me to finding Pat's salon.

Q:    How DID you find Salon 1580 and why did you choose that salon?

A:   When I did a web search for “keratin treatments” in the Atlanta area, where I live, one name/salon kept popping up:  Pat Alessi – Salon 1580. I read where people all over the greater Atlanta area were coming to Roswell JUST to get a keratin treatment from Pat!  PLUS I read where people who have moved to California and Florida, say they come back to Salon 1580, just to get a keratin treatment. I did some “comparison shopping” for pricing and was pleasantly surprised to see that Pat’s pricing was more than comparable, in fact is in the lower priced range. Then I read online reviews about the salon, especially those who had gotten a keratin treatment there, and found glowing reviews. People kept saying this process was life-changing. All this convinced me to bite the bullet and make the call.

Q:     “Bite the bullet?” So, you were hesitant to get the treatment? Why is that?

A:    Well, first of all I’m a man, and it’s easy to see from all the pictures and ads and testimonials that women are the ones who mostly get keratin treatments. Secondly, I have never been to a salon; I sure don’t mean to sound sexist, but I always assumed hair salons were for women and barber shops were for men. And lastly, I have never done anything “crazy” to my hair. So this was a big step for me.

Q:    So, you called and talked to Pat and made an appointment. How did it go?

A:    From the moment I entered the salon, Pat made me feel extremely comfortable (especially since I never thought my body would end up in a salon chair) and her expert knowledge of the treatment (and hair in general) only further reassured me that I had come to the right place. As an added bonus, I was impressed with her COVID-19 protocols and I felt safe.

"Pat transformed my hair into something that has improved my personal confidence and made the process thoroughly enjoyable the entire time. It’s awesome not to have to hide my hair under ball caps anymore. I highly recommend her to any man who might be up in the air about going to a salon to get their hair done, and especially for anyone wanting a keratin treatment. Just do it, I promise you will not regret it."

Q:    That’s awesome. I take it that it was a bit of an educational process, too … ?

A:    Yes. Pat explained how there are different formula treatments to choose from, each specialized for your particular hair type and desired results, lifestyle, etc. I wanted to keep my curls, but I wanted them to be smooth, loose, soft and shiny. I didn’t want my hair to be stick straight. I wanted to control the corkscrews and frizz. I wanted something easy to maintain.

Q:    Together you decided on the right formula … what then?

A:    Right, we chose GKhair “Curly” formula. The process took about an hour and a half. She “clarified” my hair with a special PH+ shampoo, then applied the keratin with a brush onto sectioned-off hair pieces. Then she blow-dried my hair with the keratin in it. Once all was dried, she flat ironed my hair in sections to seal the cuticle.  After our appointment I couldn't get my hair wet for 2 days to make sure the keratin bonded with my hair. After that, I shampooed and conditioned my hair and the results blew me away.

Q:   Oooh, did you see a “new” man in the mirror?

A:    The frizz was gone, my hair felt soft for the first time in my life, and I could run my hands through it without getting caught in intertwined curls. My hair did not look unnatural or permanently straight, it looked and felt like the hair I was meant to be born with. It looked and felt amazing.

Q:    What about special care after having a keratin treatment?

A:    The maintenance that Pat educated me on to make sure I get the best results was even easier than what I was doing before. It's literally just shampoo, conditioner, and some leave-in cream. No more gels or products that damage your hair. She explained how you have to use special shampoo and other products to not strip the keratin in your hair.  I was stunned to learn that most shampoos on the market (even many “professional” lines only sold at salons) usually contain sodium chloride and harsh sulfates which can strip the keratin from the hair. Yikes!

Q:    Your hair DOES look great. But are keratin treatments safe for your hair?

A:    Absolutely. I did my homework beforehand and was impressed that it repairs and rejuvenates your hair strands. And, it acts as a protective shield over each hair strand. So my hair is actually healthier and better protected than before I had it done. I learned that the only true solution to healthier, more manageable hair is restoring its natural moisture balance and replenishing lost keratin protein. A keratin treatment does just that. I mean, keratin is a natural protein that occurs in your hair anyway, right? Well, Pat shared how the keratin in GKhair (Juvexin) is natural, too, that it comes from baby sheep! You can read all about that on her website or in one of the blog posts she has put out that explains all that. (Click here for more info.)

Q:    Thanks so much, Brett, for sharing your keratin journey! Your hair does look fabulous! What would you like to say in closing?

A:    Pat transformed my hair into something that has improved my personal confidence and made the process thoroughly enjoyable the entire time. It’s awesome not to have to hide my hair under ball caps anymore. I highly recommend her to any man who might be up in the air about going to a salon to get their hair done, and especially for anyone wanting a keratin treatment. Just do it, I promise you will not regret it. (Pat even offers you some wine if you need to take edge off.)
