Hair Cuts & Styles:

'80s beauty signatures are staging a serious comeback in 2017 – clothing fashion, hair, and makeup. From crimps at Marc Jacobs’ Resort show, to spiral perms at Topshop Unique, styles once labeled glaring mistakes suddenly feel fresh and modern. 

Short shags with choppy bangs give an effortless look and are showing up on a lot of platinum blondes. Ask for a razored, sliced, free-handed haircut for texture that brings the ‘80s shag edgy and current.

The high, side ponytail made a return to the catwalk for 2017. Wrap a band of hair around the base to add some fancy. To get the look, spray thickening hair at the roots and brush up toward the top back of your crown. Secure the pony with two elastics, one on top of the other, to create volume. Flat iron the ponytail and finish with hairspray.

Beachy waves are still hot. Create the look with a dollop of mousse and lots of scrunching for sexy, wet-look waves.

Perms are in. If you want beachy waves but have straight hair, get a semi-permanent, texture-enhancing salon perm or body wave like Julianne Hough did to achieve volume and movement in your hair. Rather than going for the big, teased look from the '80s, get a modern perm that offers a soft wave pattern.

 

Create a dropped-out perm using a chopstick curling iron to create skinny spirals.

 

Half-straight, half-wavy hair took center stage on the runway. Roots should be kept sleek, with the ends given an “S” wave.

The iconic beehive is back! All up or half-up. Pass me a teasing comb and some hairspray for this retro style that screams Brigitte Bardot.

Long hair? Channel Pippi Longstocking with cute, loose and low pigtail plaits.

 Simple, twisted low knots look sleek and stylish. This easy style is great for disguising unwashed hair or bad hair days.

Sleek blowouts with sweeping, curled ends were hot on the runway. 

 Go bohemian with some micro plaits. Accent braids add a bit of chic to a simple down ‘do.

 The mushroom cut (a bowl-like bob) is cool again.

 Looks like the hun (half-up bun) is here to stay. 

Hair Color Trends & Professional Coloring Techniques:

Delicate blonde hues are big in 2017 and perfect for summer. Shades are soft, almost see-through and pastel.

Hair strobing – individualized highlighting specific to your hair color, face shape and skin tone -- is much more flattering than plain bleach foils. Ask your stylist to customize your highlight colors to your specific features if you want hair color that makes you glow.

Color melting is the new trend that allows colorists to use multiple tones of color to create seamless color from root to ends, whether you are a brunette or a blonde. This multidimensional color effect uses a number of different colors in the same spectrum and blends them together to look as if the highlights could be happening naturally in your hair. 

Eclipting is coloring the entire head with a dark base then strategically placing highlights in specific sections to accentuate the shape of the hair while contouring the face.

Snowlights – With these highlights, shimmering pieces of pale blonde scatter across the top of the head like snow. As you can see from Miranda Lambert's 'do below, it’s a sparkling lift for your summer hair color.

Flaunting your grown-out roots is increasingly trendy. Shadow roots are going to the extreme. Instead of an inch of growth, expect to see a solid five-inch chunk between the root and color. And those impatient for natural grow-out are actually paying to have those roots darkened to achieve this look.

 

2016’s hottest color trend – rose gold, the color that blew up Instagram – is still hot. Like rose gold precious metals, it’s a pink-tinted blonde that lights up your look.

 

Warm blondes are making a comeback. Buttery beige and sandy blondes are overtaking icy blondes, as seen below with Gwyneth Paltrow. 

 

Blorange is the color mix to watch in 2017. It’s a hue between blonde and ginger.

Blonde-Gray is often seen with a solid inch of nearly-black roots. Also gray-gray is still a hit. You can read more about this color in my blog post HERE. 

Bronde is here to stay, a color that sparkles blonde in the light, and goes chocolate in the shadows.

 Honey-colored highlights in dark hair for a super-subtle look is gorgeous.

 Amethyst roots with platinum blonde is hot for a fun look.

Color me beautiful with rich hues of autumn

Ecaille, cinnamon, buttery, pumpkin spice, chocolate-mauve … these may sound like items on a French café menu, but they are actually the hottest trending, yummiest colors for Fall and Winter 2016.

Also known as “tortoiseshell,” the ecaille features golden highlights that will make your mane appear shiny and sun-kissed, paired with darker, rich caramel tones. This color trend is a wonderful way to warm up your hair, as well as add shine and dimension to your hair. 

The hair color “chocolate-mauve” broke Twitter. When rose gold and rich brunette collide, the results are undeniably fabulous. Best achieved with color painting, it's a look that flatters every complexion because it mixes both cool and warm tones. While a bit complex for the stylist to achieve because it requires multiple color processing applications, it is low-maintenance. 

Pumpkin Spice is a trending color that can best be described as rich copper with hints of gold. For inspiration, use the #pumpkinspicehair hashtag to look for images of this gorgeous color, and keep your skin tone in mind when consulting your stylist.

Best Hairstyles for Fall and Winter 2016

This fourth quarter season is rich in texture, curls, and volume. And perms and body waves are back! 

What’s hot:

• Texture and movement achieved through waves, curls, or texturizing cuts

• Deep, precision side parts

• Knots – messy or tidy, knots rule -- at the nape, middle of the head, or on top.

Bobs, lobs (long bobs), and all mid-length haircuts are still hot items for Fall and Winter 2016. It's also bangs season so you can layer and angle your hair up to your eyebrows. But don't worry, if you love long mermaid locks and voluminous curls, that's all still in style, too.

From pixies to long layers and '60s bangs, here are the cuts for every length that are trending right now:

Bobs and Lobs:

• One-length Bobs - Sleek, with barely a bend that hugs the chin are still in, but avoid round-brush blow-drying, as the style may look a bit dated. Add bangs for a sophisticated look.

• Textured Blunt Bobs are wavy, one-length styles that are still very popular. A-Line/inverted bobs are still sported on celebs but mostly parted on the side with soft waves. No matter which bob or lob you choose, ask for a cut with movement.

• Blind Bob - Somewhere between a longish pixie and shortish bob lies this cheekbone length cut. Tapering and shaving the neck gives it a polished look.  Or try the natural look where the cut is shattered at the jawline and then deconstructed by debulking the underneath so it doesn't appear layered, appearing loose and undone instead.

• Crops - Single-length, shoulder-grazing strands become transcendent when the ends are point-cut for extra movement.

“No-fuss” and “an effortless look” describe what’s trending for fall hair styles. 

Bohemian, loose waves for long hair -- hot during the spring and summer -- is a look carried over this year into autumn. The focus is on thick texture and movement. 

Here are some options to achieve tousled locks if you don't have natural waves: 

1. Braid damp hair, air-dry, and unwind to achieve the bohemian/bedhead look. 
2. Try getting a body wave from Salon 1580. 
3. Spray long, damp hair with volumizer and blow-dry your hair upside down. Once your hair is 75 percent dry, part it and twist it into two low pigtail buns, leaving the ends out so they stay straight. Aim the blow-dryer at the buns for several minutes until they're dry, mist them with hair spray, undo the pins, and shake your hair out in all its rumpled glory.

Finger-raked knots, loose french twists, the undone updo, and the deconstructed chignon are hot styles for longer hair. Embrace messiness and ease with a new take on the classic french twist. -- “Creamy Yellow,” “Honey Blonde,” "Flaxen Gold," and “Buttery Blonde” -- pale, golden tones and/or honey tones added to blonde hair
-- Light brown with blonde contrasting highlights
-- Blonde hair with rich brown and/or auburn lowlights
-- “Champagne Red” and “Strawberry Gold,” a great enhancement for dark blondes
-- "Burnt Auburn," “Cinnamon,” or “Copper” strands are perfect for fall.

Ombrés are still big -- natural-looking, soft ombre highlights. Ask your stylist to give you highlights that are just barely lighter than your natural hue, working them into the ends and in random sections throughout, rather than perfectly spaced ones. 

Hair accessories are making a serious comeback, particularly headbands. Leather hair accessories like headbands and rawhide to tie back ponies are seen on the runway. Jeweled, decorative accents add glitz and glamour. 

 

 


Get your "neigh" on and sport a ponytail -- messy or sleek, bouncy volumized tails, low ponytails, tails wrapped in metal and leather are making a statement. Side-pinned low tails tucked just behind the ear, are huge for autumn. 

 


Deep side parts are big -- you will see them everywhere! A real eye-opener, too.

 


The two-toned look is trending, particularly with gel-slicked deep side parts. Try slicking a section from ear to ear for a headband look. If you use gel to go with the wet grunge look, be careful that it doesn't end up looking like greasy, unwashed hair.
